The starting flag is up: The German Sailing League begins again – on Berlin’s Wannsee. What happened last time in 2019 should come true again this year: The championship trophy of the German club teams should start at the end of October after six sailing weekends Havel and Wannsee to return. The chances are not bad: the German Sailing League starts the new season at the weekend. All three Berlin first division clubs, 18 in total, have their home in the southwest of Berlin. The reports about it now Tagesspiegel newsletter for Steglitz-Zehlendorf in its current edition.

The greatest hopes can arise shortly before the start of the season Club Seglerhaus am Wannsee make. In 2019 he won the championship title, in 2022 the team took third place, just three points behind the Überlingen Sailing and Motorboat Club in second place. However: The top dog in first place led the table last year with a whopping 13 points ahead.

What in football Bayern Munich is, is in sailing the Norddeutsche Regatta Verein; the club from Hamburg has already won the championship six times. But now the cards are being reshuffled again. The sailor’s house at Wannsee, the Berlin Yacht Club (2022: sixth place) and the Sailors’ Association 1903 (last twelfth place) have the top third of the table firmly in view.

Because the quality of the teams is constantly increasing. “The squads of the Bundesliga clubs include top athletes from the Olympic boat classes who, with their extensive competitive experience, Consistently increase the level of the league“, says Oliver Schwall, organizer and founder of the German Sailing League. “Small space tactics before the start and classic match race elements now dominate the demanding races, especially in the first Bundesliga.” In addition, the athletes are getting younger and younger. When the league was formed in 2013, that was it average age at 30 years, now it has dropped to under 25 years, the league announces.

The first “game day”, as the regatta weekends are called in sailing, will take place from Friday to Sunday, May 12th to 14th, on the Wannsee. The host is the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee. You will see the uniform J/70 boats of the Bundesliga on the water: “On average 30 to 40 individual races are sailed on a league weekend”, explains Oliver Schwall.

Also the second Bundesliga will set sail from the club grounds at Am Grossen Wannsee 22. Here three other Berlin clubs cavort in the field: The Joersfelder Sailing club from Reinickendorf (relegated from the first division in 2022), the club am Rupenhorn from the west end and the Potsdam Yacht Club at the Wannsee Bridge.

The German Sailing League still has one issue to nibble on: The proportion of women is increasing, according to the league and in the press release at the start of the season it writes: “Women have become indispensable in the German Sailing League, numerous clubs rely on mixed teams.”

But on the crew list for the first sailing weekend of the first and second leagues on the Wannsee there are 122 athletes compared to only 28 female athletes. After all: The teams of four from Berlin Yacht Club and Sailing House at Wannsee are composed equally, at the Potsdam Yacht Club and the Club at the Rupenhorn there are three men and one woman in the same boat. That’s last year Sailing team from FC St. Pauli was awarded for the highest proportion of women – it was also the only inclusive crew. St. Pauli is no longer there this year, the team was one of the relegated teams in 2022.

Where is a good place to watch? “Stairways and terrace of the sailor house offer the perfect opportunity to follow the flights up close, because you sail directly in the bay in front of the VSaW and the races are explained there by experienced members,” says the Website of the association Seglerhaus am Wannsee.

If you can’t be there, you still have the opportunity to be there: The competitions are on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon live on youtube transfer. The web address is: youtube.com/segelbundesliga.
