Several mountain passes are closed in the morning on Thursday due to bad weather.

Traffic operator in Vegtrafikksentralen West, Tom Erik Englaugstad, warns everyone who will be traveling in the mountains today.

– Bad weather, strong winds and a good amount of precipitation create challenges on the mountain. Changes may occur continuously, but smooth roads seem to persist throughout the day, he says.

– It is mainly the mountain that presents the challenges. In the lowlands, temperatures are high and, for the time being, driving conditions are fine.

– A real winter’s day

In the east of the country, traffic operator Hilde Bjørnstad asks motorists who do not absolutely have to go out to stay inside.

– It is quite slippery in places due to snow and winter conditions. It’s a real winter’s day, so you really have to take it easy and keep a good distance from other motorists, says Bjørnstad.

– Stay indoors if you are in an area where it starts to rain and freeze, she says.

Yellow hazard warning

A yellow warning for strong winds has been issued in large parts of the country. According to meteorologist on duty at the Meteorologists, Martin Granerud, it can blow up to 30-35 meters per second in the gusts in some places.

– It will be particularly challenging in the mountains today. This applies to almost the entire country. Strong wind and snow can lead to snow drifts and poor visibility, says Granderud.

– We are seeing a new round of transition from freezing temperatures to mild weather in southern Norway, and the temperature is around 0 degrees. Along the coast in Southern Norway, it is probably so mild that it will only be wet.

In northern Norway, it is mostly dry weather, according to Granerud.

– But it is quite windy over Saltfjellet, so I would recommend everyone to be careful there, he says.

Convoy driving and closed crossings

On Riksvei 7 above Hardangervidda there is convoy driving.

National highway 13 above Vikafjellet and county road 53 above Årdal-Tyin are completely closed due to bad weather. There is also convoy driving where E134 over Haukelifjell.

The E6 at Moss is also closed in the southbound direction at the exit to Patterød.

– A trailer has sheared just before the exit, writes the Police in East on Twitter.

Approximately 20 meters of the guardrail must have been driven down.

– The waiting time can be long

Advisor at NAF, Jan Harry Svendsen, has some advice for anyone traveling in bad driving conditions, writes NTB.

– The visibility is poor, the driving is challenging, and many do not have experience of driving in this way. Drive softly and at a steady speed, and make sure you have eye contact with the car in front, says Svendsen in a press release.

He reminds that the waiting time can be long before you are led over the mountain, and that warm clothes, food and drink are therefore important equipment to have with you in the car. At the same time, you must make sure that you have as full a tank or battery as possible.

– Put on warm clothes and send cold air up the windscreen when driving in a column. If you use hot air, you may risk ice formation on the windscreen if it is below zero outside. In addition, you should have the front and rear fog lights on and drive with warning lights, says Svendsen.
