Extremely active Atlantic hurricane season predicted for 2024

MIAMI.- Researchers from Colorado State University (CSU) predict that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be extremely active due to high sea temperatures and the La Niña phenomenon.

The CSU forecast calls for 23 named storms, including 11 that will reach hurricane status, with winds greater than 74 miles per hour, five of which will be major, with winds exceeding 111 miles per hour.

Meteorologists noted that the 2024 forecast was the highest named storm prediction CSU has ever issued. If the prediction is true, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) would use all the names assigned in the list of Atlantic storms for 2024. In that case, a supplementary list would have to be used, as was done in the hurricane season. of 2020.

Usually, the list has 21 names placed in alphabetical order that are assigned in order of appearance to storms that exceed 39 miles per hour.

The first storm of the 2024 season, which begins on June 1 and ends on November 30, will be called Alberto, followed by Beryl and Chris, while the last name on the list is William.

The season is expected to be more active due to above-average Atlantic surface temperatures, which, along with other factors such as La Niña, could fuel the formation of hurricanes.

In the 2023 season, 20 named storms were recorded in the Atlantic, seven of which reached hurricane status and three were intense. It is considered the fourth season with the most storms since 1950. In the particular case of Florida, it was not one of the most affected states, although in August, Hurricane Idalia, a category three, hit the Big Bend area, causing at least four deaths and more than 2.5 million dollars in damage.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in an average season there are 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, three of them major.
