The world of sports associations: circles of power, often enough “men’s clubs”. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser no longer wants to accept this.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) calls for greater representation of women in sports. “Many top floors of sports associations need to be properly aired,” said the Federal Minister, who is also responsible for sports, to our editorial team.

Faeser criticized, “especially at the international level, the associations are often still extensive all-male clubs. These closed circles of power are completely out of date.” Female athletes stand for the diversity of society. “Unfortunately, you can’t say that about many official levels of the associations.”

The social democrat demanded more equality in the sports world. “Women are far underrepresented there.” This is also shown by the failed candidacy of the Norwegian football association president Lise Klaveness for a seat on the UEFA board. “Out of 20 members there are still 19 men. It is high time that women also play a stronger role in sports committees – and that the diversity of our society is reflected there,” said Faeser.

The Federal Minister of the Interior called the hosting of the Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany in 2026 “great news” for all of German sport. “We are also working with great passion to bring the 2027 Women’s World Cup to Germany,” said the SPD politician. “million girls and women carry their local sports clubs. This enthusiasm must also be visible at the top at the big tournaments: Team sports are a woman’s job.”
