Of course, the significantly increased possibilities that AI development brings with it also attracts people who primarily want to make money quickly with it. This has now also been learned from the Spotify streaming service and had to react.

The company recently removed tens of thousands of tracks from its database that originally came from music startup Boomy. This works with AI systems to produce music. Despite the large number, the deleted songs account for just 7 percent of the titles that originated with Boomy, the US magazine reported Ars Technica citing a person familiar with the matter.

Accordingly, only titles in which suspicious streaming activities were recorded were targeted. The music group Universal Music had pointed this out – and not just Spotify, but all major operators of music streaming platforms.

AI is not the problem

In concrete terms, it looks like people brought the pieces of music generated by the AI to Spotify and then used bots as fake listeners. In this way, large numbers of streaming calls were generated, which can then be used to tap corresponding shares of the funds distributed. The deletions are primarily about fraudulently inflating the access numbers – and not that the music was generated by a computer system.

Boomy allows users to select different styles or descriptions like “Rap Beats” or “Rainy Nights” to create a machine-generated track. Users can then also release the music to streaming services, where they receive royalties. California-based Boomy claims its users have created more than 14 million songs. Spotify doesn’t really care if the music comes from a human artist or an AI, as long as the retrieval of the track can be traced back to a listener’s genuine interest.
