NEW YORK — At least six people needed medical attention, including two firefighters, after a two-alarm fire broke out at Mt. Sinai Hospital in East Harlem early Friday, the FDNY said.

The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. According to the FDNY, it appears the fire started in a generator room located on a basement floor.

Fire officials said medical staff and patients were told to shelter in place while ConEdison staff rushed in to assist in the emergency, before the fire was finally deemed under control just before 4 a.m.

At one point, dozens of employees were waiting outside the hospital. Additionally, our sister network NBC 4 New York was told that some patients had to be relocated inside the hospital for safety.

Six people were injured, including two firefighters who were transported to Cornell Medical Center.

Mt. Sinai management issued a statement saying, “Mount Sinai Health System confirmed today at approximately 12:30 am Mount Sinai Hospital. No injuries were reported. Mount Sinai Health System would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the FDNY frontline personnel and first responders.”
