A drunk man armed with a knife attacked and injured several rescue workers and federal police officers in Essen. The 30-year-old, who officers discovered unconscious on patrol in the main train station, fought tooth and nail against being transported to a hospital.

The helpers were slightly injured by kicks and punches, said federal police spokesman Hendric Bagert on Wednesday morning. The rioter carried the knife with him, but fortunately it was not used.

As Bagert reported, officials had patrolled the main train station around 1 a.m. on Wednesday when they noticed a man lying on the ground. Since he was not responsive even after several attempts, they alerted an ambulance from the Essen fire brigade. The paramedics took over the 30-year-old and brought him to the emergency vehicle for further treatment.

Measured over two per thousand alcohol

A little later, the federal police officers met the Hagen again. Travelers supported the drunk man. The police officers brought the heavily staggering to the station. During a search they found the knife at hand, which they seized. A breath alcohol test revealed that the drunk was heavily intoxicated with over two per thousand.

At the same time, paramedics reported to the federal police station and explained that their patient had suddenly decided against being transported to a hospital and had attacked the paramedics. The man also defended himself against an escorted transport by federal police officers by insulting, attacking and injuring police officers and hospital staff.

The attacker was then taken into police custody. The federal police initiated investigations into insults, threats, bodily harm and attacks on rescue workers.
