A Vibraphonist Eduardo Cardinho and saxophonist Miguel Valente will accompany the two orchestras at the Cine-Teatro de Estarreja, in the double concert that marks International Jazz Day.

The third edition of the Jazz Festival of the University of Aveiro ‘Campus Jazz’ appears “with the consolidation of an eclectic program, dedicated to training, research, mediation and promotion of jazz in Portugal and in the region of Aveiro”, anticipates a press release about the festival.

The first moment of Campus Jazz 2023 will coincide with the celebrations of the International Jazz Day, on the 30th, in partnership with the municipality of Estarreja, extending the festival until the 16th of June and providing the opportunity to see and hear live jazz in the region, with names like Carmen Souza, Jacky Terrasson and Shai Maestro.

In the opening concert, the UA Jazz Orchestra, made up of Bachelor and Master students in Music, will present a repertoire based on ‘Jazz standards’, as well as some contemporary jazz and popular music themes, under the musical direction of João Martins.

The program includes a concert and ‘masterclass’ by Carmen Sousa, on the 5th of May, which crosses the lines of jazz with the traditional sounds of Cape Verde.

The French pianist Jacky Terrasson will also be one of the featured soloists in the third edition, accompanied by the UA Jazz Combo, on May 9th, at 21:30, at the Casa da Cultura de Ílhavo.

Henrique Albino Quartet is announced for the 18th of May, in the space of the UA Experimental Theater Group, (GrETUA), in a project led by the creative composer and multi-instrumentalist from Pernambuco who performs at Campus Jazz with the support of the Ibermúsicas program, for a ‘masterclass’, a concert and a ‘jam session’.

The Israeli-American pianist Shai Maestro, another of the highlights of the poster, will be invited to play with the UA Jazz Orchestra, on June 2nd, in the Renato Araújo auditorium, also offering two ‘masterclasses’.

The Campus Jazz festival is organized by the University of Aveiro, through the Center for Jazz Studies (CEJ), a structure dedicated to the dissemination, documentation and research on Jazz, founded in 2007, from the reception of José Duarte’s collection.
