Looking ahead to Saturday’s gala, two other films are emerging as protagonists, with six nominations each: the somber Chilean comedy Countdirected by Pablo Larraín, and Close the eyesa co-production between Argentina and Spain directed by veteran Iberian filmmaker Víctor Erice.

The popular vote also favored the Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi, recognized for her leading role in Blonde, a film that also marks her debut as a director.

“Hold on to Argentine cinema, hold on to world cinema, we must never give up, they are not going to stop us!” said Fonzi after receiving the statuette, alluding to the crisis that his country’s cinema is experiencing due to the budget cuts of the government of Javier Milei.

The Spanish Úrsula Corberó and the Argentine Santiago Korovsky also received the audience award, as best actress and actor for a television series or miniseries respectively, as did the Spanish series The body on fire.

Tribute to Cecilia Roth

Previously, actress Cecilia Roth denounced the dismantling that Argentina’s cultural industry suffers due to Milei’s economic policies, as well as the discourse that seeks to label artists as parasites of the State.

In the conference prior to his distinction on Saturday with the Platinum Honor Award, Roth lamented that it is becoming difficult to produce cinema and culture in Argentina. “They are dismantling everything related to culture in general and cinema in particular, I want this to be known in Latin America and Spain. In some way it is a request for help as well,” said the 67-year-old interpreter.

He added that this is a wake-up call to the artistic community and the public because perhaps in 2025 there will not be any Argentine production in this type of awards, due to budget cuts.

Roth stressed that cinema and the cultural industry give income to the country and do not live solely on state support.

“That is the idea that is being established among people, that all of us who participate, all of us who make films or are linked to culture, are parasites of the State,” said the actress. “This cruel and unfair idea must be modified,” she added.

For Roth, one of the muses of the famous Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and with almost 50 years of experience, it is necessary for the community around the Platino awards to act on this situation and actively resist this complex moment.

“We have built, with a lot of struggle, an industry that is not yet solidly established, so a strong wind like this one that is happening now in Argentina can hit the industry in general,” reflected the actress.
