The fire brigade saved three residents from a burning house in Altenessen with the turntable ladder. One was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

In the event of a fire in Altenessen-Süd, the Essen fire brigade rescued several residents from the burning house with the turntable ladder on Saturday evening (January 7, 2023). One of the rescued was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. During the hot phase, the fire brigade was on duty with two fire engines, an additional fire engine, several special vehicles, three ambulances, two emergency doctor vehicles and the chief emergency doctor.

Residents could not escape via the completely smoke-filled stairwell

At 7:39 p.m., callers reported fire smoke from the basement shafts and several windows of a three-and-a-half-storey apartment building on Koopmanns Hude Street in Altenessen-Süd via the emergency call 112.

When the first firefighters arrived on site, two residents at windows on the first and second floors drew attention to themselves, who were unable to escape via the heavily smoky stairwell. A fire brigade spokesman explained that several teams were immediately sent to check the stairwell and to fight the fire in the building. At the same time, the two residents were rescued with a turntable ladder.

In the meantime, an emergency worker from the back of the building suddenly reported flames from an attic apartment. The rescue team immediately moved up the stairwell to the attic: a man was freed from his apartment and immediately treated by the emergency doctor. The patient, who had inhaled massive amounts of smoke, was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. All other tenants had left the building unharmed before the fire brigade arrived.

Cellar had to be flooded with foam

After rescuing the resident, the fire in the attic was quickly extinguished with a jet pipe, the fire brigade said. The fire in the basement had already progressed so far that bare power cables were hanging from the ceiling. The high temperatures in the basement would also have made targeted firefighting impossible. At around 9.45 p.m., the fire brigade therefore flooded the basement with foam from the outside. In order to switch off the electricity in the building, the entire street had to be taken off the grid for a short time.

The police have opened an investigation into the cause of fire.
