At the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, the stars showed a lot of skin on the red carpet. One Hollywood family in particular drew attention.

The 76th Cannes Film Festival opened on Tuesday with the awarding of the Palme d’honneur. The US actor Michael Douglas was honored with the award this year. “It means so much to me,” said the Hollywood star on stage at the ceremony. “Because there are hundreds of festivals in the world… but only one Cannes.” He is even older than the festival, said the 78-year-old, who looked back on his long career and important companions in his speech.

Michael Douglas traveled to France with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their daughter Carys. The two also accompanied him on the red carpet – and outshone the real star of the evening. Because the two women attracted everyone’s attention with their clothes.

Carys, who, like her parents, is aiming for an acting career, felt visibly comfortable in the flurry of flashbulbs. For the performance, the 20-year-old chose a cream-colored Elie Saab dress with delicate floral appliqués. The transparent mesh fabric and deep cut-outs on the décolleté, back and sides let a lot of skin shine through. Mama Catherine Zeta-Jones also relied on an XL neckline for her floor-length red robe.

With their outfits, mother and daughter reflected the trend of the evening. Because numerous stars showed deep cutouts on the back and décolleté as well as high leg slits on the red carpet. See the most beautiful looks from the opening ceremony in our photo show:

Actress Chiara Mastroianni led through the opening ceremony on Tuesday evening. “The purpose of this festival was and remains the evocation of our freedom,” she said. “The freedom to express the power and fragility of our existence.” Alongside Douglas, Mastroianni also welcomed this year’s jury onto the stage – headed by director Ruben Östlund.

Following the gala, the opening film “Jeanne du Barry” will be shown. The film by the French actress and director Maïwenn tells the story of Marie-Jeanne Bécu (1743-1793), a mistress of the French King Louis XV. Johnny Depp embodies the king, Maïwenn himself plays Bécu.

The Cannes Film Festival runs until May 27th. For the first time this year there is a woman at the helm, the new President Iris Knobloch.
