Surgeon’s ward 102 is one of the wards at the Central Hospital where patients can now choose which food to eat during their hospital stay, based on a menu with 18 different dishes.

– Spaghetti with minced meat sauce and meatballs with mash are popular, says Maria Ohlqvist, nutrition strategist at the Värmland region.

She is one of those who worked on developing a menu that patients can choose from. The work is based on new national guidelines regarding food in hospitals. It is mainly about flexible meal solutions. When you can eat, what you want and when? And by offering a whole menu of different dishes, you can both reduce food waste and make patients feel better.

The new departments also offer the opportunity to get hot food whenever you want to eat.

Many very sick

– Many patients who are hospitalized are very ill and it is not certain that they will be able to eat when the food cart arrives.

Patients in other departments will now also have the opportunity to choose from different dishes. It is a little different how it is followed, but the idea is that the new meal order should eventually be present throughout the inpatient care in Värmland.
