The tenth anniversary of the tragic flood in La Plata is approaching and a group of those affected decided to carry out a street intervention in the heart of the city. Shouting “alert”, “danger”, “hidden deaths” and demanding a contingency plan with early warning, the group was planted at different traffic lights with huge photos of the worst natural catastrophe that the Buenos Aires capital suffered in its entire history.

As indicated to 0221.com.ar The protesters themselves, who took to the streets on this occasion, are residents of Tolosa, one of the most affected areas on the days of April 2 and 3, 2013, when a large part of the city was under water.

Around noon this Saturday, the residents stopped for several minutes at the corner of 7 and 49 and every time the traffic light turned red they took photos of streets covered by water and of some of the victims of that April 2 , to reclaim the memory of the rest of the people from La Plata who circulated through the city.

Before, the campaign had started in the area of the Bus Terminal. “We are concerned that there are many people who do not know what happened or prefer to forget”they explained. Fabiana Uro, one of the assemblies, recalled the usual requests: “complete hydraulic works and a contingency plan that is known to the entire population.” The assemblywoman remarked that “La Plata continues to be a flood-prone city and hiding it is a crime.”

This Saturday’s memory day is a preview of a series of activities that will be repeated until April 2, the day that marks a decade since the tragedy that left an official figure of 89 dead that is also questioned by the assembly members .

At the traffic light at 7 and 49, the protesters recalled the “concealment maneuvers” of the deceased that were denounced in the days after the catastrophe and because they included that denunciation in their chants.

Finally they charged both against the current municipal and local governments for the lack of dialogue. As indicated, the governor Axel Kicillof They have been unsuccessfully asking for an audience while the mayor of La Plata Julio Garro received them once.
