The President of the Republic is going to a hospital in Corbeil-Essonnes this Friday to send his wishes to caregivers in a context of crisis for the health sector.

Olivier Véran has “a conviction”: “The president is going to deliver a landmark speech”, on the health system, while he must send his wishes to caregivers this Friday morning in Essonne.

“Our health system needs reforms, structural [et] deep”, continued the government spokesperson on BFMTV-RMC. If these “could not all be carried out during the Covid period”, “there have nevertheless been significant transformations”, according to Olivier Véran who judges however that one “does not reform a system while it has its head under water”.

Pay better those who “exercise under duress”

During Emmanuel Macron’s first five-year term, the government notably set up the “Ségur de la santé”, after the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. Result: 12 billion euros annually to better pay caregivers and 19 billion investment in hospitals.

Before, in 2018, the head of state had launched the “My Health 2022” plan, with the removal of the “numerus clausus” which capped the number of medical students.

For the rest, Olivier Véran calls for a health system “in which the fact of exercising under constraint”, with for example a “permanence of care”, “pays better than exercising without constraint”. Beyond this philosophy, the former Minister of Health has not made any announcements.

“Very concrete measures”

The wishes of the President of the Republic to caregivers are eagerly awaited. The context is tense: the staff, already exhausted by three years of pandemic, must face a triple epidemic of Covid-19, bronchiolitis and influenza.

In addition to this, several hotbeds of protest are emerging: liberal doctors are on strike for the second week in a row to demand a doubling of the price of the consultation (from 25 to 50 euros); biologists promise “a black month of January”; FO-Santé calls for an indefinite strike from January 10 to protest against the government’s “inaction”.

To respond to this situation, the Elysée promises “very concrete measures”.
