The battery and charging systems are one of the major hurdles in the development of e-cars. Ford had to stop production of the F-150 Lightning earlier this year due to problems. Now a video shows how one of the vehicles burns out completely while charging.

Even cars are just machines that can sometimes go terribly wrong. In the case of electric cars, a fire in the battery is one of the rumor-case scenarios – in the past we had repeatedly reported problems at Tesla, but also at other manufacturers. Now Ford and its F-150 Lightning electric pick-up are in the inglorious limelight because of a fatal defect.

As the US broadcaster CNBC reports, Ford stopped production of the vehicle for several weeks at the beginning of the year. Following a media inquiry based on the Freedom of Information Act, journalists have now been able to view video footage and photos showing the incident that led to the costly decision to delay production.

Fire in Ford parking lot

On February 4, Dearborn, Michigan, police received an 911 call about a fire that had broken out at a Ford parking lot. According to the information currently available, an F-150 Lightning caught fire during the loading process, and the fire spread to two adjacent vehicles. It is currently unknown how long the fire lasted.

Ford said in a statement to CNBC it traced the cause of the problem back to battery production at a Georgia plant. In the next step, steps were quickly taken to improve quality control in cooperation with the contract manufacturer.
