Cuban prison judge requests political asylum in the USA

TEXAS.- The Former Cuban judge Melody González Pedrazaknown for her controversial condemnations of protesters in Cuba, is asking the United States not to deport her to her home country due to the serious reprisals she could face. Currently detained at the Broward Transitional Center in Florida, González Pedraza has requested international protection from the United Nations (UN).

According to review Marti NewsIn a complaint filed on July 25 before the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, González Pedraza accused the Cuban regime of distorting the judicial system through political intervention and control of State Security. She also warned that her life would be in danger if she were deported to Cuba.

“I trust that my voice will be heard and that the government and system of judges in the United States will not hand me over to death, probable imprisonment and the most humiliating situation,” González Pedraza said in his letter to the rapporteur in Geneva.

The former Cuban judge also hopes that her testimony will contribute to the release of the four young Cubans Andy Gabriel González Fuentes, Adain Barreiro Pérez, Eddy Daniel Rodríguez Milián and Luis Ernesto Medina Pedraza, whom she sentenced in 2022 without sufficient evidence, accused by a repressive regime of allegedly throwing Molotov cocktails at state property in Villa Clara.

The former judge arrived in the United States on May 31 under the Humanitarian Parole program implemented by the Joe Biden Administration. However, her entry was rejected due to her inclusion on the list of repressors of the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba (FDHC).

Recently, the Provincial People’s Court of Villa Clara accepted the appeal of the four convicted youths, scheduling a new trial for August 9.

A close relative of González Pedraza, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed his confidence in the American justice system and in the UN structures. “This step by Melody is relevant and positive for everyone: the four young people affected, the judges forced to exercise politicized justice, and for her herself, since she is seeking some protection from the UN,” he said.
