Mecano member accused of hiring illegal immigrants

MADRID.- A judge announced an investigation into Nacho Cano, a former member of the group Meccanofor keeping around twenty people working irregularly Mexicans in his musical Malinche in Madridthe courts reported today – July 30.

Cano, who has denied the accusations, is suspected of crimes against the rights of foreign citizens and against workers, said the statement from the Madrid court, which added that three other people linked to the production will also be investigated.

According to the ruling by Judge María Inmaculada Iglesias, dated July 29, Cano’s theater company selected 20 dancers in Mexico to bring to Spain on scholarships, but they ended up working with the Malinche company without having received any type of authorization to do so.

The company promised the Mexicans, who were instructed to tell immigration authorities upon arrival in Spain that they were tourists, that their situation would be regularized once they were in the European country, but that never happened.

The 61-year-old former member of Mecano, one of the most famous Spanish pop groups in its country and Latin America until its dissolution in the late 1990s, is being investigated following a complaint filed in January by one of the Mexican dancers.

After being questioned by police in early July, Cano denied any wrongdoing, saying that the young Mexicans had come on scholarships, in a programme coordinated with the cultural institution of the Mexican embassy.

At the time, the artist claimed that the only reason behind this case is his support for the regional president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, a very popular figure from the hardest wing of the conservative Popular Party, the main opposition party, and a usual target of criticism from the left.

“This is the Stasi,” Cano told the newspaper. The worldin which he was very critical of the Spanish police.

Crimes against former member of Mecano

The crimes against Cano are punishable by penalties ranging from fines to several years in prison.

The musical Malinchereleased in 2022 and with more than 500 performances so far, is a project by Cano dedicated to the controversial figure of La Malinche, the indigenous woman who was the lover, translator and advisor of Hernán Cortés and who helped him conquer Mexico.

Mecano, made up of Nacho Cano, his brother José María and the singer Ana Torroja, was formed in the early 80s and disbanded in the late 90s.

He gained a lot of popularity with songs like Son of the Moon, The Force of Destiny o Cross of knives.
