France puts all its trust in Deschamps, despite the defeat

Didier Deschamps will continue as coach of France until the 2026 World Cup, according to the president of the French Football Federation.

Following the defeat in the semi-finals of the European Championship against Spain, it was assumed that if Deschamps did not continue it would be logical, but the French federation still has confidence in its coach.

France were beaten 2-1 by La Roja on Tuesday night with goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo condemning them to their fate after Randal Kolo Muani had opened the scoring.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals, France’s elimination capped what had been a disappointing tournament, with Les Bleus scoring just one goal from open play and putting in several uninspiring performances.

Didier Deschamps will finish his contract, provided he does not renew it, on the bench of the runners-up in the next World Cup, 2026.

“Deschamps will stay. He must continue to fulfil his mission,” Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, told L’Équipe. Before the Euros, he had set the semi-finals as his target, a round in which France was eliminated from the tournament. In fact, even though he had not achieved the mission that was conferred upon him, Deschamps had full power to decide whether or not he would continue in charge of the French national team once the competition was over.

The option of Zinedine Zidane continues to loom on the horizon, but the former Real Madrid coach will have to wait at least two years to fulfil his dream of managing the French national team.
