The French government is still fighting against access, which is too simple, to X sites by underage Internet users. He is currently developing an application intended to block access to the youngest.
The French State is at war against pornographic sites. The latter are deemed too lax regarding access restrictions for underage Internet users. Last September, a parliamentary report mentioned avenues intended to curb the phenomenon, in particular the ability to simply block access to X sites not making any provision to restrict their use by elderly people under 18 years old.
At the time, access automatically involving the use of a bank card was also mentioned, but this then seemed too restrictive and problematic in relation to issues related to privacy and data security. So what is the solution? The track of a mobile application intended for service seems to be becoming clearer, according to information collected by The Parisian.
A mobile application to validate your age
The details of the state initiative are not yet known, but our colleagues from Parisian explain that different entities have been actively working on it for about nine months. The Arcom, the Cnil and the State Secretariat in charge of digital are hard at work, accompanied by specialized private companies.
The idea would be to confirm your majority from a mobile applicationwhich would then allow access to pornographic sites without revealing their identity.
“A user of a pornographic site, when he wishes to access it, must certify his majority by clicking on this digital certificate”explains Jean-Noël Barrot, minister in charge of digital, in the columns of Le Parisien. “It will work a bit like the control requested by your bank when you make an online purchase, except that this certificate of majority will be anonymous. »
It remains to be seen how this process could be implemented, because it seems rather complex at first sight. Internet service providers could have a role to play in this regard, for example by playing the role of ” trusted third party “ able to certify that his client is indeed of legal age.
Other organizations could be involved in this process. However, Le Parisien explains that at present, discussions are still ongoing with possible partners.
Towards an application available at the start of the school year?
Obviously, there is still some vagueness to be cleared up in this projectwhich is however very close to the heart of the government. The application seems planned for the start of the 2023 school yearwhich still leaves time to fine-tune its operation.
And even if the application turns out to be ready for the start of the school year, still it will be necessary that the pornographic sites adhere to the principle. We imagine that those who do not will face sanctions, but again: which ones? The subject is thorny and even if one can think that the big platforms will agree to lend themselves to the game, for other more confidential and obscure, it may be different.
