AVM has announced the Fritzbox 6670 Cable for cable connections. It represents an improved Fritzbox 6660, which the manufacturer advertises with Wi-Fi 7 support. However, this only applies to a limited extent: the router cannot set up a wireless network in the 6 GHz band.
If the receiving device – such as a smartphone – supports Wi-Fi 7, it should be possible to connect it via two networks simultaneously with the new channel bundle function Multi-Link Operation (MLO), but then only via 2.4 and 5 GHz. At AVM, the particularly fast 6 GHz channel with a gross data rate in excess of 10 Gbit/s is reserved for the fiber optic/DSL top model Fritzbox 5690 Pro for the time being.
Also the OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) channel access technology introduced with Wi-Fi 6 for channel splitting is included according to the announcement. The Fritzbox 6670 transmits up to 720 MBit/s in the 2.4 GHz network and 2880 MBit/s in the 5 GHz network via two MIMO streams each – the 20 percent increase in speed compared to the Fritzbox 6660 is achieved by the WLAN Router probably thanks to QAM-4096 modulation.
Zigbee and Matter for the smart home
Smart home devices can be connected to the Fritzbox 6670 via DECT ULE and Zigbee – a firmware update will add support for Matter. As usual, a DOCSIS 3.1 base and DECT telephony are on board.
There are no differences between the Fritzbox 6670 and 6660 in terms of the rest of the equipment. Both models have a 2.5 Gbit/s connection and four Gigabit Ethernet ports. A printer or an external hard drive can be connected via a single USB 2.0 port – USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 GBit/s, formerly known as USB 3.0) is reserved for the more expensive routers.
The announcement will be made as part of the Anga-Com trade fair. AVM has not yet commented on the delivery date and price.
