Climate activists are planning protests in Berlin for the next few days to spur on the government to speed up the fight against global warming. Citizens must be prepared for disruptions.

First of all, the group “Extinction Rebellion”, abbreviated XR, wants to open a protest camp in Invalidenpark in Berlin Mitte this Wednesday and demonstrate at various locations on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, civil disobedience actions are planned that will not be publicly announced.

Next week, from April 19, the group “Last Generation” will follow suit. “We come to Berlin, bring the city to a standstill to get the government to move,” she writes on your website. In the last week of April, she plans to block streets in Berlin until May. “From Monday, April 24th, we will peacefully bring Berlin to a standstill with street blockades,” says the website. On the Sunday before – on April 23rd – a meeting was planned in the afternoon at the Brandenburg Gate.

Both groups are separate but share similar goals. They are calling for a citizens’ or society’s council with drawn members alongside the parliament. “Extinction Rebellion” says it wants to use the “Spring Rebellion‘ refer to the loss of species. The “Last Generation” also represents demands for 100 km/h on motorways and the new edition of the 9-euro ticket.

Both groups also stand for similar forms of action, which they regard as non-violent. The “Last Generation” usually organizes traffic blockades, with activists sticking themselves to the road. Extinction Rebellion invites “creative actions of civil disobedience”. For this purpose, action trainings are offered in the protest camp.

Above all, the “last generation” has drawn a lot of anger from blocked drivers and a lack of understanding from politicians in recent months. However, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution does not regard them as extremist and not directed against the free democratic basic order.

The climate protection movement “Fridays for Future” accuses the activists of the last generation of dividing society with their protest actions. “The climate crisis needs solutions for society as a whole and we can only find and fight for them together and not by pitting people against each other in everyday life,” said spokeswoman Annika Rittmann for the dpa news agency.

Blockades in Hamburg particularly affected commuters “who can neither afford to live in Hamburg city center nor use public transport due to the lack of expansion. The same is to be feared in Berlin.” With good reason, Fridays for Future has always relied on other forms of protest. (dpa)
