The election campaign in Berlin will enter the next phase at the beginning of the new year. Six weeks before the repeat elections for the House of Representatives and the district parliaments, the parties start putting up posters on Berlin’s streets and squares on Monday night. On Monday morning (10 a.m.), the SPD state chairwoman and governing mayor, Franziska Giffey, will present the central poster motifs of the SPD to the public and present the election campaign in the “nhow” hotel in Friedrichshain.

CDU top candidate and parliamentary group leader Kai Wegner is in the morning (11 a.m.) when posting posters on Theodor-Heuss-Platz in Westend (Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf), Greens top candidate and environment senator Bettina Jarasch in the afternoon (2:30 p.m.) in Spandau. According to the latest polls, the SPD, Greens and CDU are close together.

Berlin’s state returning officer Stephan Bröchler has set the election date for February 12th. In mid-November, the state constitutional court declared the September 2021 elections invalid due to numerous glitches and “serious systemic deficiencies”. In mid-December, the Federal Constitutional Court received a constitutional complaint and an urgent application against the court’s decision that the elections would have to be repeated in their entirety.

The 43 plaintiffs also include members of the state parliament. However, the state returning authority has announced that it is not justifiable to interrupt preparations for the election and wait for a decision by the Federal Constitutional Court, especially since it is not clear when a decision can be expected and in which direction it could go. The election notifications should therefore also be sent out as planned from Monday. (dpa)
