Diesel sold on average 1.67 euro per liter last week in France, against 1.84 euro per liter for gasoline.

The average price of diesel at the pump fell sharply again last week. The price of the most consumed fuel in France has indeed lost 5.5 cents, to stand at 1.6655 euros per litre, according to the latest figures published on Tuesday by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and stopped on the date of Friday, May 5.

For its part, gasoline (SP95-E10) lost 3.8 cents, with an average price of 1.8401 euro per liter.

Diesel thus regains its price at the end of September 2022, but it then benefited from a government rebate of 30 cents (and that of Totalénergies which added an additional 20 cents). Without this discount, we find the price at the end of January 2022, before the start of the war in Ukraine.

A difference of more than 17 cents

What further widen the gap between gasoline and diesel, with a price difference which now represents 17.46 cents. We have to go back to June 2016 to find such a gap between the two fuels: except that at the time, diesel sold for 1.14 euros per liter and gasoline for 1.32 euros per liter.

Several factors explain this large price difference. Already, a more favorable taxation for diesel, with 10 cents more tax on gasoline.

We can then add the international context: following the embargo on Russian diesel, the other suppliers finally offer this fuel at a lower price than expected.

Finally, the start of the “driving season” in the United States tends to strengthen demand for gasoline, which may explain the lower current decline for this fuel, and therefore a greater difference with diesel.
