The public prosecutor of Épinal announced at a press conference this Thursday that the suspect in the murder of little Rose, 5, was the subject of a new provisional psychiatric assessment while in police custody.

New provisional expertise establishes that the suspect in the death of little Rose, 5, suffers from “impaired discernment” and shows “dangerousness for others”, said Frédéric Nahon, public prosecutor, in conference press this Thursday from the court of Épinal, in the Vosges. New expertise still needs to be practiced.

In police custody, the 15-year-old young man, however, did not make “delusional remarks” and asserted his right to silence, said the prosecutor.

“At the moment, we don’t have his version of the facts with which he is charged,” he said.

This suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday in the investigation into the discovery of the body of a 5-year-old girl in Rambervillers, in the Vosges.

The prosecution requests his indictment

The young man must be presented this Thursday afternoon to an examining magistrate. The prosecutor indicated that the prosecution was going to request his indictment with placement in pre-trial detention.

The suspect had already been indicted in 2022 for previous acts of rape, sexual assault and kidnapping. Frédéric Nahon specifies that the facts concerned two boys aged 10 and 11 and that they took place in a forest near Rambervillers in February 2022.

A previous psychiatric expertise had been carried out in the context of this case. She had noted the absence of mental disorders, but showed that the adolescent suffered from a mild mental deficiency, a self-centered functioning, and a psycho-emotional immaturity of the adolescent.

An autopsy on Friday

The prosecutor also returned to the remarks of members of the suspect’s neighborhood who reported “inappropriate gestures” on his part. Frédéric Nahon indicates that the gendarmerie received “no complaint” and “no report”, the neighbors only making the connection after the announcement of the girl’s death.

An autopsy must be carried out on the body of the girl Friday morning the forensic institute of Nancy, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. “We will know more about the circumstances of the death and the existence or not of acts of rape”, indicated Frédéric Nahon.

Aged under 16, the suspect faces a sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and not life because of his age.
