O Gmail received an artificial intelligence improvement to make it easier to search for emails and content. The service now shows an area called “Main Results” before the others to try to guess what your search is.

According to Google, the tool will help people “find exactly what they are looking for much faster”. The idea is that the AI uses machine learning models that understand the context of the search, taking into account the most recent results, the people you interact with the most, or the messages you open most often.

To check it out on your mobile device, navigate to the Gmail search bar and type in relevant keywords to see matching results. The “Main Results” area will be positioned just below the search field and before the other emails — which appear sorted from newest to oldest.

Mobile optimized search

Developers say it’s a feature people have requested a lot, mostly because Gmail’s search has never been up to snuff. The engine even offered filtering by labels, people or dates, but it only considered written words to display results.

“Top Results” began rolling out to all customers with Google Workspace accounts and free individual profiles on Android and iOS (iPhone). The promise is for a gradual delivery, so it may take a few weeks for your account to be honored.

This feature already existed, albeit in a limited way, in the web version of Gmail since November of last year. At the time, Google pointed out that the tool would help co-workers, because it would show results with files or keywords associated with the search terms.

Gmail with many improvements

On cell phones, Gmail received a look adapted to folding models earlier this year. The change provides the user with an interface better suited to large and split displays, which improves the user experience.

Gmail should rely on the help of Bard’s AI, based on the Duet AI model, to summarize emails and create drafts with responses. The tool can suggest writing messages with formal tones or adopt a more relaxed style.

The app is widely used on cell phones, so Google’s concern to make it as good (or better) than the desktop version is justifiable. And it seems that this has been the focus of the developers.
