Avatar 2 just overtook Titanic at the worldwide box office. It thus becomes the third highest-grossing film of all time behind Avengers: Endgame. James Cameron has therefore made three of the four biggest films in history.
Released since December 14, 2022 in cinemas around the world, Avatar: The Waterway continues its momentum. After surpassing $2 billion in worldwide revenue in January, Avatar 2 has now passed Titanic. He harvested over $2.24 billion at the worldwide box office and thus became the third highest-grossing film of all time.
James Cameron released the second Avatar 13 years after the original film. This did not prevent Avatar 2 from meeting a huge success by exploding the worldwide box office. Fans did not hesitate to rediscover or discover for the first time the planet of Pandora and the Na’vi.
Will Avatar 2 surpass the number one film at the global box office?
At the start of January, Avatar 2 became the 7th highest-grossing film in history, surpassing Jurassic World. It is now just behind Avengers: Endgame which has accumulated $ 2.79 billion. The first Avatar is still at the top of the leaderboard with $2.93 billion. Therefore, James Cameron made three of the four biggest movies of all time.
Even in France, Avatar 2 managed to break a record that had not been broken since 2019. The film was a hit in French cinemas with more than 10 million admissions. But then, does Avatar 2 have the potential to surpass Avengers: Endgame and especially the first film in the franchise? Over $690 million still separate the two Avatar movies. It is therefore not certain that the blockbuster will succeed in collecting this sum.
Waiting for, James Cameron is preparing the sequel to the Avatar series. The director has himself confirmed that the financing and production of Avatar 3,4 and 5 are already secured. Principal photography for Avatar 3 has already been completed and it is now in post-production. If there’s no delay, Avatar 3 should hit theaters in 2024.
