Mexico City.– A herd of goats protects against forest fires a native Chilean forest located in Santa Juana, in the center of the South American country.

As part of Buena Cabra, an ecological prevention project for this type of disaster in Bosques de Chacay, the animals create fire breaks through grazing, according to their Instagram profile.

By feeding on vegetation that could burn during a wildfire, goats help establish such flame barriers by removing combustible material.

“Goat grazing works to prevent fires,” says Buena Cabra on social networks, as his animals keep the territory free of weeds to prevent the spread of fire.

Through this practice, the use of herbicides and machinery that could harm nature is also avoided, says the initiative founded by Rocío Cruces Neira.

With the support of the goats, Bosques de Chacay remained safe from forest fires that affected nearly 450,000 hectares from January to March due to an extended heat wave, according to data from the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator in Chile.
