Google Chrome will make it harder to download files from insecure sources. The user can still force his decision if he wishes.

Web browser publishers have been working for many years to prevent security risks while leaving the user’s hands free. You’ve probably seen the red warning page of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge telling you about danger on a page you wanted to visit.

With a future version of its browser, Google would like to go further.

The changes in google chrome source code were relayed by Android Police. This new security option should automatically block insecure downloads using HTTP rather than HTTPS.

Such a tool is already used by most browsers for conventional web pages. When you access a website with an HTTP URL, the browser may automatically redirect you to the HTTPS version to enhance security.

The user should still retain control over the operation and should be able to force the file to be downloaded from HTTP if desired. In this case, Google will offer a warning to ask to verify the safety of the operation.

This change is expected to roll out later this year with a future version of Google Chrome.
