Google stops largest construction project
There were years at Google when it was difficult to imagine how the company’s bubbling sources of money would ever dry up. Meanwhile, Google’s most important product, search, isn’t what it used to be. With ChatGPT, a tool emerged that does many traditional Google tasks better – and Microsoft is doing everything it can to ensure that as many people as possible use it. For the first time since its inception, the basis of Google’s business is threatened, not a good time for a gigantic construction project.
And so reported CNBCthat Google is completely stopping the group’s largest construction project for the time being. The company actually wanted to lay the foundation stone for a gigantic project this year. In the center of the city of San José, a gigantic company campus was to be created with “Downtown West”, which would combine living and working in a separate district – 32 hectares in size and full of office buildings, parks and apartments. As CNBC reports, this is not a short-term delay. Google is said to have no plans to continue the project “in the near future”. Public information about construction progress had already been removed from Google’s website last month, and it has now become known that the company has almost completely scrapped the development team for the campus in San Jose.
For San José, the development equals the worst-case scenario. The Google campus construction site occupies a central area of the city and is now largely a demolition zone with no certain future. City officials told CNBC that the area could become a “long-term eyesore and economic deadlock.”
