BOGOTA.- Former National Registrar of Colombia, Alexander Vegalaunched a strong criticism of the management of the electoral process in Venezuela, stating that neither Colombia nor the international community should request the publication of the electoral records of the recent presidential elections in the neighboring country due to the illegitimacy of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

“What the Colombian government and governments must do now is reject the CNE’s results. A recount of the minutes can no longer be requested because the minutes have already been published by the opposition, they are completely legal, valid minutes, because they have QR codes, they have transmission codes,” he explained.

Vega, who has vast experience in electoral matters, questioned the legitimacy of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), claiming that the system is completely controlled by the regime of Nicolás Maduro. “The electoral system fails because the electoral council is totally controlled by the government of the dictator Maduro,” Vega said. According to him, the position that the records should be requested is unnecessary and uninformed, since the records have already been recovered and published by the opposition.

The former registrar stressed that Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, made the voting records accessible, which she considers valid and legal. “The records are already there, the leader of the opposition, Dr. (María) Corina Machado, recovered them. In other words, a recount cannot be requested because the records are already there.”

In this regard, Vega argues that any request for the additional publication of minutes is redundant and unfounded.

Petro’s request is unnecessary

Vega also criticized the Colombian president’s call Gustavo Petro for a recount of the votes, suggesting that this request is not only unnecessary, but also counterproductive. “The national government has not only lacked strength because it is no longer possible to request votes,” he said. According to Vega, the international community, including Colombia, should accept the votes published by the opposition as the reliable source of information and reject the demands for new recounts.

The former registrar also demanded that members of the CNE of Venezuela be prosecuted due to the lack of transparency and inconsistencies observed during the electoral process. “The attitude is painful and the members of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela will have to be prosecuted,” he concluded.
