It was in the point of general affairs, of the Plenary Session this Wednesday, that the PRI member explained that, although old age does not represent a disability in itself, it does refer to a functional limitation typical of age, which must be attended from a vision of universal accessibility, guaranteeing conditions that counteract possible violations of their human rights.

Independence for grandparents

This initiative aims to modify the Law for the Protection of the Rights of the Elderly of the Stateproposing that each person preserve their independence, freedom of action and autonomy, but without ignoring the reality of this sector, which lives a greater vulnerability to diseases, various forms of employment discrimination and even mistreatment.

The legislator stated that old age should be a dignified and healthy stage where each person from the age of 60 strengthens the powers of different state agencies to generate programs that allow the prevention, timely detection and treatment of different types of illnesses and most common diseases in the elderly.

“Aging is not a specific moment, but a natural process in people’s lives, and given this expectation, citizens must be attended to in order to have a healthy population in their stage as older adults,” he said.

For their part, the institutions will have to develop criteria for comprehensive inclusion and accessibility in state urban planning and in all urban action to generate friendly cities for the elderly.

Incentives or stimuli should also be promoted so that companies and businesses provide older people with decent employment options, opening opportunities for them through consultancies and training so that they acquire the minimum knowledge or skills for their work.

“The cycle of life continues as natural stages, and we, as deputies, must foresee the future of our citizens and guarantee dignified aging in the different stages of adulthood,” he said.

“It is time to look at the present and the future of the population and dignify the life of each elderly person in Yucatan,” concluded Gaspar Quintal.
