Fans have been waiting for what feels like an eternity for a sequel to Gremlins 2 and indeed the (not always) furry creatures are returning to screens soon – albeit animated and as a series. This has been known for a while, but now Warner Bros. and HBO Max have also released the first teaser trailer.

Prequel to the movies

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is closely linked to the two cinema films from 1984 and 1990, but unlike these does not play in a small or large American town, but in Shanghai in 1920. The animated series starts much earlier and should be due to the chosen location reveal a lot about the origin of the mysterious Mogwai.

Gizmo is of course also part of the party and the human protagonist, a boy named Sam Wing, should also look familiar to some: Sam is the owner of the shop in Chinatown where the inventor Randall Peltzer raised the little Mogwai Gizmo in the first Gremlins movie buys.

The “rules of the game” don’t change in the series either, and so the Mogwai are never allowed to get wet, be exposed to sunlight or eat anything after midnight – there’s no question that this happens anyway.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai starts on May 23, 2023 on the streaming service (HBO) Max, at least in the USA. When we get to see the series in this country, however, is not yet certain.
