Smartphones sold around 200 and 300 euros are very numerous on the market. It becomes difficult for the consumer to choose among all these references. If you are looking for a device with a balanced technical sheet at a relatively contained price, we have unearthed two interesting models for you, one from Oppo with the Reno 7 and the other at Samsung with Galaxy A23 5G.

Both products have been tested by us and each obtained the mark of 8/10. Each model has its qualities and faults that could tip the balance one way or the other. To find out which one deserves your money, we will try to enlighten you in your choice through this comparison.

Samsung and Oppo smartphones on sale:

Successful smartphones for the price

For this price range, the materials used are less noble than the more high-end models, but the Oppo Reno 7 and Samsung Galaxy A23 still offer a neat design. The Chinese manufacturer chooses to take inspiration from the Cupertino company, and offers slightly rounded flat edges on the corners which make it easier to grip. The Korean giant leaves glass or metal aside, in favor of plastic for its Galaxy A23. We find the touch of the Galaxy S, and surprises with its lightness. It is pleasant in the hand even if it weighs 22 g more than its competitor.

On the back, Samsung opts for a more refined and discreet look. The Galaxy A23’s photo module blends into the shell. For the Reno 7, we are entitled to a more retro aspect at the level of its optical block, which is reminiscent of the old silver cameras. Regarding photographic performance, the two are not champions in this area, but are capable of delivering good daytime shots. The Samsung model consists of four sensors including an ultra wide-angle which is absent on that of Oppo. On the other hand, slack of megapixels will make it lacking.

A better display at one of the two

On the front, we discover two devices with screens with thin borders, only downside, the thickness at the level of the chin quite marked on one and the other. With the punch located at the top right, the front of the Reno 7 is harmonious. Oppo has taken care of the display part and presents a 6.43-inch Amoled panel in 2400 × 1080 pixels with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. We know Samsung for the quality of its screens. However, here the A23 is content to offer a 6.6-inch LCD panel supporting FHD + definition. Fortunately, the brand makes up for it by offering a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz to ensure smooth navigation.

In terms of software, whether it’s the Galaxy A23 or the Reno 7, both run on Android 12. At Samsung, we are entitled to the OneUI interface, a fluid interface with a good number of customization options. When configuring the device, it is quite frustrating to find a strong incentive to install advertising applications from the manufacturer. Otherwise, it is possible via an update to have OneUI 5 and Android 13. And, unlike other Galaxy smartphones, it will be supported for security updates for four years, but will only benefit from two years of Android updates, bringing it to Android 14 at most.

At Oppo, ColorOS leads the dance, a colorful interface, rather fluid and above all very intuitive. The ergonomics are well thought out and the OS is pleasant to use with many functions for customizing gestures, for example. The Chinese brand provides three years of major updates to this model, bringing it up to Android 15.

Effective in the vast majority of daily tasks

Initially sold under 350 euros, do not expect a monster of power in this price bracket. To work, the Oppo Reno 7 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, associated with 8 GB of RAM. It’s not the newest of chips, and even lacks 5G. Nevertheless, you will be able to enjoy a fluid experience on a daily basis. However, it will not have the shoulders to launch 3D games in the best graphic conditions. On the Galaxy A23 side, it is powered by the Snapdragon 695, coupled with 4 GB of RAM. This chip unlocks 5G for the device and provides relatively good fluidity. It will nevertheless have difficulties, like its rival, in running greedy games.

To take full advantage of your device, Oppo incorporates a 4,500 mAh battery. On the Samsung side, there is a 5,000 mAh battery, but that does not mean that the Reno 7 is less enduring. When running our ViSer protocol – which simulates the active use of a smartphone – it managed to last 1:56 p.m. before reaching 10% battery from 100%. A great feat since the Galaxy A23 lasted 12 hours and 25 minutes. Both will easily manage to collect a day of use, but if your use is more extensive, it will be difficult to reach the two days.

It is also at the charging level that the Oppo Reno 7 stands out with its fast charge of 33 W against 25 W for the Samsung Galaxy A23. He therefore fills up with energy more quickly than his opponent: 50% in 30 minutes. For comparison, on the Samsung A23, we were able to recover 32% of battery in 30 minutes, from 19 to 51% precisely.

Oppo Reno 7 or Samsung Galaxy A23 5G: which one to choose?

After having developed the qualities and faults of each, it is time to take stock to help you in your choice. Of course, you have to take your needs into account. For example, if you have a 5G plan, the Oppo Reno 7 skips it. If this criterion is not essential, know that this phone does not suffer from slowdown, and daily use is very pleasant, in particular thanks to the ColorOS interface which sublimates everything. It will not be the right companion for fans of mobile games, but Samsung does not do better on this side.

Another good point for the Oppo phone: its screen. For this price bracket, we appreciate finding a beautiful fluid AMOLED panel that will be ideal for watching video content, or browsing social networks. Both smartphones are able to last a day without flinching, but if you have intensive use, only the Reno 7 is more effective in recovering percentages faster.

We can conclude that the Chinese smartphone from Oppo wins the duel. Know that even with its small flaws, the Samsung Galaxy A23 will not disappoint anyone, for its good camera, its good autonomy, its good screen and its interface.
