Guatemala wins its second Olympic medal in history

PARIS.- Jean Pierre Brol the diocese has Guatemala the second Olympic medal in its history, by winning bronze in the men’s trap shooting category.

Brol, the oldest shooter in the final at 41, became the second Guatemalan Olympic medalist. The first was Erick Barrondo, who won silver in the race walk in London 2012.

For a moment Brol looked doomed to elimination, but he overtook Sweden’s Rickard Levin-Anderson to climb onto the podium. The Nordic shooter missed three shots in a row.

“I am ecstatic,” Brol said. “If I talk too much, I start crying. It was very difficult and it was very hot. This is a monumental thing for my country.”

Those in Paris are the second Olympic Games Brol. He competed in the 2012 London Games. He gave a hint of his podium intentions at the end of last year by winning the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santiago.

When she competed in the British capital 12 years ago, Brol did not make it to the final round. It was a different story this time, at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre — the Olympic range located three hours by car from Paris.

In the race for gold, Britain’s Nathan Hales kept his cool in the heat in France to claim the gold. He set an Olympic record, making 48 of 50 shots in the final. He beat the previous Olympic record by five and was one shy of his own world record.

The silver medal went to China’s Qi Ying.

End of the Olympic dream for Osorio

Colombian Camila Osorio battled for more than two hours under the sun against one of the best tennis players in the world. She was close to another feat for her country at the Paris Olympics, but a muscle problem in her left leg prevented her from getting over the wall.

American Danielle Collins, ranked ninth, won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in the round of 16 match on Court 14 at Roland Garros, where spectators waving Colombian flags chanted “ole, ole, Cami, Cami.”

Osorio, 22 years old and world number 83, greeted her rival and then emotionally thanked her compatriots and French players who supported her enthusiasm despite the scorching heat.
