Haiti's new prime minister discharged after asthma attack

PRINCE PORT- The new Prime Minister of Haiti, Garry Conille was discharged this Sunday after being admitted to a hospital the day before due to respiratory discomfort, two government sources announced.

The leader’s health status is stable, according to both informants.

This Sunday afternoon, Conille posted a video in which he appears standing and speaking to the camera. “I am publishing this recording to assure you that I am fine,” she said, promising that her cabinet will be complete this week.

The 58-year-old prime minister was hospitalized on Saturday for an “asthma attack,” an official source reported at the time.

“After a week of intense activities, the president felt slightly ill on Saturday afternoon and went to the hospital to receive treatment,” the official’s communication office said that night on the social network X.

Presidential transition council

Conille was named prime minister last week by Haiti’s presidential transition council following the March resignation of his predecessor, Ariel Henry, amid a rise in gang violence in the country. He was sworn in Monday.

A doctor by profession, the politician already headed the Haitian government for six months, between 2011 and 2012, and served until recently as regional director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).

Before his medical emergency on Saturday, Conille visited the international airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where he praised security forces for allowing flights to resume after more than three months of interruption due to violence.

In late February, the gangs launched coordinated attacks against strategic sites in Port-au-Prince, saying they wanted to overthrow Henry.

According to the authorities, the Haitian capital is 80% in the hands of criminal gangs, accused of numerous abuses, in particular murders, rapes, looting and kidnappings for extortion.

The population is also facing a serious humanitarian crisis, with shortages of food, medicine and other basic goods.
