Mulheim.
People on the Rhine are less likely to suffer from heart disease than on the Ruhr. According to the Barmer ranking, people from Cologne are affected less often than people from Mülheim.

The “Morbidity and Social Atlas” of the Barmer Krankenkasse shows a lot of data on health and illness in the state – with exciting results also on heart diseases. In Cologne, around every fifth person suffers from heart disease on average, while the national average is more than every fourth person. While the people of Domstadt are heart healthier, there is a higher number of heart patients in the Ruhr area – especially in Mülheim. According to Barmer, there are 284 affected people for every 1,000 inhabitants in Mülheim.

How the Morbidity and Social Atlas is structured

Based on the data of their approximately nine million insured nationwide, the health insurance company has extrapolated how the health and illness of people in the federal states and municipalities is ordered. For a total of 35 diagnoses, it is broken down in detail how often it occurs in the district or in the big city and how badly which age group, which gender and people are affected depending on education and income.

When it comes to heart health, North Rhine-Westphalia as a whole is hardly any better or worse than Germany as a whole – if you factor out the age factor, the people in the Rhine and Ruhr are slightly sicker. A look at the regions reveals clear differences. People along the Rhine are significantly healthier. The large cities in the Ruhr area do rather poorly in the ranking.
