Heavy rains in India leave 5 dead and record rainfall in New Delhi

New Delhi.- At least five people were killed and two others injured on Sunday in incidents related to heavy rains hitting northern India, where power and road outages were reported, and record rainfall in New Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued the red alert in several districts in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Punjab, and Haryana and Kashmir; and the orange alert on Madhya Pradesh and some areas of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

For its part, the Indian capital, for which a yellow alert persists, yesterday registered the highest volume of precipitation in July since 1982, with 153 mm in 24 hours, the IMD said on Twitter.

Heavy rains in the north of the Asian country also caused the temporary suspension of the Amarnath Yatra, an annual Hindu pilgrimage to a cave located at an altitude of 3,888 meters, about 150 km from Srinagar, in the Indian-administered Kashmir region.

Some 3,000 vehicles are stranded on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, where part of the road collapsed yesterday and landslides were reported, the Indian news agency ANI reported.

The IMD estimated in its latest bulletin that “high intensity” rains will persist in the coming days in New Delhi and neighboring areas, and the north of the country.

Heavy rains cause significant personal and property damage in South Asian countries every year, especially during the monsoon period between May and September.
