BEIRUT — An Israeli attack carried out on Tuesday in Syria killed a member of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollahan official said. An Israeli woman and a man were killed in Israel following a Hezbollah attack in response.

Hours earlier, an Israeli drone struck a car in Syria near the Lebanese border, according to a war monitor and the pro-government Syrian radio station Sham FM. The Hezbollah official spoke on condition of anonymity in compliance with regulations.

The Britain-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two Hezbollah members in the car were killed in the attack, while a Syrian driver was seriously wounded. Neither the Syrian authorities nor the Israeli military have yet commented on the incident.

Hezbollah later identified the fighter as Yasser Nemr Qranbishalthough he did not reveal the circumstances of his death, in line with standard practice relating to Hezbollah fighters who do not serve in leadership roles.

Hezbollah supporters mourned his death on social media, calling him “the shield of the Sayyed,” a reference to his position as bodyguard of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Later on Tuesday, Hezbollah announced that it had fired dozens of Katyusha rockets at an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights in retaliation for the killing. Israeli police said one man and one woman were killed by the rockets, adding that they were civilians.

In recent years, Qranbish was active mainly in Syria and involved in arms shipments to Hezbollah, said an official with an Iran-backed group, who also spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose the information.
