On Tuesday, May 16, the royal couple will visit Kalmar on the occasion of the king celebrating 50 years on the throne. During the visit to Kalmar, a royal salute will be fired with 21 shots.

– It will be a historic event. Kalmar Castle and town is a place where salutes have been fired for hundreds of years, but the tradition ended at the end of the 19th century. Now is the time again, to pay tribute to Sweden’s longest reigning monarch, says castle director Meg Nömgård.

Two minutes

The Armed Forces are responsible for the salute, where 21 shots are to be fired over the course of just over two minutes.

– It’s a salute shot, it’s not something that is fired. But we don’t want boats or canoes here near the castle to be surprised or scared, says Meg Nömgård, adding that the shots will be heard around 4.20 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
