Are you more of a Hogwarts team than Hogwarts, and prefer to explore the universe of the famous school of witchcraft in the language of JK Rowling? Don’t worry, Hogwarts Legacy is playable in the original English version, and with French subtitles if necessary. Since the game does not clearly offer it to you, we explain how to go about it.
You have just acquired Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy and you want to play it in the most immersive conditions possible, consistent with the original atmosphere, namely in English? At first glance, it’s not as simple as that: if your console is set to French by default, the game will launch in the language of Molière, but above all, no in-game option allows you to change the language of the dubbings. Yes, my Lord, I hereby assure this game requires a full English-dubbed experience, far better than French!
Whichever version of Hogwarts Legacy you play, the latter will base the language of the text and the voices of the game on that set on your system, which means that if your console (PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series) or your PC is set so that the games launched on your system are in French by default, Hogwarts Legacy will therefore launch in full French version. This means that not only will the game texts, subtitles and menus be in French, but so will the dubbing. Of course, if you switch your system to English, you will be able to have the original dubbings… but all the texts will also be in English. This does not help fans of the “VOST” (original version with subtitles), which favor original dubbing with subtitles (and menus) in French.
Spoiler: no, no magic potion unlocks the in-game language choice, and that’s a shame.
Fortunately, it is totally possible to circumvent this situation. Yes, it is quite possible to play in VOST at Hogwarts Legacy, but this requires a little trick that is far from obvious, and that the game published by Portkey Games will absolutely never communicate to you, even though it would be very practical! On PS5, the trick takes place outside of the game, and consists of press the Options button on the Dual Sense controller when you are on the game icon, then choose “Manage game content”. From there, you will access your potential extensions and other additional content, but also… the language packs, called here “Linguistic data”. All you have to do is download the language whose dubbing you want to use in the WB Games game, then restart it to enjoy it without changing the system language.
What about Xbox and PC?
Unfortunately, it does not seem possible (for the moment?) to play in VOSTFR (original version with French subtitles) on PC and Xbox, according to our tests: we can only change the language of the system to activate the English voices, for lack of an option directly integrated into the menus in-game. Gold, making this change involves changing all texts (menus and subtitles) to English as well, and that’s probably not what you want. We will keep you informed as soon as a solution is found.
