The monotheistic religions have similar roots – and similar festivals. But what do Jews and Muslims actually celebrate at Easter?
Easter is the most important festival in Christianity. From Maundy Thursday through Good Friday to Easter Monday, Christians celebrate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. But what about the other two monotheistic world religions, Islam and Judaism? Do Muslims and Jews also celebrate Easter?
Jesus was after all a Jew and in the Koran, the most important scripture of the Muslims, he is even a messenger of God. This year, the Christian Easter, the Jewish Passover festival and the Islamic month of fasting Ramadan even fall on the same days. Is this a coincidence? The short answer: yes and no.

Jesus became Jewish during or just before Passover crucified. Along with Hanukkah and Yom Kipur, this is one of the three most important festivals in Judaism. While the date of Christmas, i.e. Jesus’ birth, goes back to a “pagan” tradition, the date of the crucifixion is considered relatively secure due to the reference to the Passover festival.
In Judaism, Passover is celebrated on the occasion of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Here they lived in slavery at the Pharaoh’s court. He only let her go when God sent his ten plagues to punish the Egyptians. Exactly that could have been the reason why Jesus and his disciples last supper came together to celebrate Passover.

To this day there are common traditions. This is not allowed on any celebratory table on Passover or Easter lamb meat absence. The names for Easter in some languages also testify to the parallels. The Danish “Påske”, the French “Pâques” and the Italian “Pasqua” go back to the Hebrew Passover.

It is widely known that Jesus plays a role in Islam. that he loud Koran could not be killed by humans, less. Jesus was not only a prophet but also a messenger of God. Few other people were sent by God like Moses or Abraham. And these could not die by human hands.

The month of fasting ramadan is always celebrated in the ninth month of the Islamic year. It is considered one of the five pillars of Islam. In this month the Prophet Mohammed is said to have received the first revelations.

It is no coincidence that all three festivals coincide this year. Because they are based on similar ones calendars: Christian Easter is based on the phases of the moon, Islamic Ramadan on the lunar year, which has only 354 days. The Jewish festival of Passover begins on the first evening of the first full moon in spring.
This year the Jewish Passover is celebrated from April 5th to April 13th. Ramadan begins on the evening of March 22nd and ends on the evening of April 21st. the Good Friday falls in 2023 on April 7th, Easter Monday on April 10th. (os)
