In order to create a PDF format that can be filled out on the screen, you do not necessarily need an expensive special program such as Adobe Acrobat. The Writer from the Libre Office Suite is also sufficient for simpler forms, such as a private purchase contract or the membership application for a club. Incidentally, the word processing from the free office package has this function ahead of the Office suite from Microsoft. You can also create fillable forms in Word. If you then export it as a PDF, however, all interactive fields are lost.

At LibreOffice (Download) on the other hand, at least some important elements such as text fields and selection boxes survive the PDF export. However, you have to be aware of some special features and restrictions.

First step: Design your input form as an ordinary text document. All formatting options such as fonts, sizes and colors, text boxes and frames are available. The places that should be fillable either leave blank or use placeholders, for example a series of underscores. You can remove them later.
