Dieter Egger on his position as mayor in Hohenems.

In 2015, Dieter Egger became mayor of Hohenems. His range of topics for the election campaign was very broad, he had big plans. Above all, Egger wanted to “close the rifts that have arisen in the city.” In addition, he had set himself the goal of speeding up important projects such as traffic concepts for the city center or creating an investment-friendly climate so that companies would settle in Hohenems. Seven years and one more election later, a lot has happened in the city.

“I believe that a lot of what was promised at the time has also been implemented. Above all, I think we have succeeded in creating a very positive atmosphere in Hohenems,” emphasizes Mayor Dieter Egger. At the political level, there is very positive and constructive cooperation across party lines. “Even if you don’t share the same opinion, we treat each other with respect. Everyone tries to move the city forward,” Egger says. It was also possible to carry the positive climate into the economy – into the trading companies and the gastronomy. The mayor is convinced that Hohenems is developing very positively and dynamically and that this has also been received by the population.

Came to stay

In 2022, Egger won the direct election with a clear majority of 63.45 percent. At the time, he made a very conscious decision to switch from state politics to city politics. For Egger, the office of mayor is a calling. It has always been a matter close to his heart to further develop his hometown. He always saw the potential of Hohenems. “It was exciting for me to find out whether it would really be possible to further develop this small, lovely town,” emphasizes the mayor. “I think we’ve shown the potential and opportunities Hohenems has in recent years. It’s still a lot of fun to be involved in city politics,” says Dieter Egger.

Egger’s perspective on state and federal politics is now only from the outside. “I used to be part of state politics, now I’m an observer,” explains the mayor. He only gets involved in state politics when it comes to the interests of the cities, more precisely the interests of Hohenems. Otherwise, Egger stays out of state politics.
