Your Twitter feed may not show tweets as they are posted. Here’s how to switch your timeline to chronological order.

You might not have realized it, but there are two ways to view tweets in your feed Twitter. You can choose between a chronological thread or an algorithm-weighted thread, which chooses the “ Popular tweets “.

  • The timeline stacks tweets from accounts you follow, one above the other, displaying the last posted on top, endlessly. (This is the default behavior of third-party software like Tweetbot and Twitterrific, which no longer work since the arrival of Elon Musk)
  • The weighted thread, he selects the tweets that he will highlight the most, depending on several factors, including the number of shares, “likes”, as well as the number of followers you have in common with the person who emitted the tweet in question. Twitter’s algorithm will also “learn” and adapt based on your actions: this is called machine learning.

In its early days, Twitter only worked chronologically. Then in 2016the platform changed its algorithm to show only the selection weighted by its algorithm — which is a way to increase the interactions of Internet users with each other.

The aficionados of the social network complained about it, regretting this robotic insertion in an operation of which they appreciated the chronological simplicity. Twitter has therefore backpedaled by offering this alternative: users can now choose between the two types of layout.

It’s a feature all the more useful as Twitter admitted on October 21, 2021, that its algorithm-weighted News Feed gave more space to tweets from political figures on the right than on the left. To escape this bias, it is therefore possible to switch its timeline to a chronological version.
