Reset your Nintendo Switch correctly

Resetting Nintendo Switch may be necessary under different conditions. We can imagine resetting it to be able to resell it. In this case, it is strongly recommended to be connected to the Internet. The procedure that will be described will delete all data on the console. It is therefore recommended to have already loaded your data and saves on the SD card or ideally directly in the new Nintendo Switch.

  • Open Nintendo Switch Settings from the menu at the bottom of the home screen
  • Go to the “Console” tab
  • Scroll down until you get to “Reset Option”
  • Enter the parental password if there is one

You will then be able to reset a few settings, including full console data. The microSD card can also be formatted directly from this menu. It is necessarily advisable to do this when you buy a new SD card.

  • Press “Next” then “Reset”

Reset Nintendo Switch without losing data or after a bug

In the event of a bug that prevents you from restarting your console, you must first hold down the POWER button for 12 seconds.

Once the console is off, it is possible to go through the two procedures: the reset without losing the data and the “hard reset”. In any case, it is strongly recommended to go through the first procedure first when possible.

The “Hard Reset”:

  • Hold the volume (+) and (-) buttons, then press the POWER button to turn on the console. Keep the volume buttons pressed until the reset screen appears

  • If you have parental controls activated, you will be asked for the code
  • Select “Continue” on each successive screen while reading the instructions
  • At the last step, select “Reset console”

To keep your data, simply choose the option “Reset console without deleting save data”. Follow the instructions then select “Next” and “Reset console without deleting save data”.
