The kick off of the European Figure Skating Championships was given this Wednesday, January 25 in Espoo, Finland. The competition will end on Sunday January 29 with a closing gala. Here is the program.

Since Wednesday, January 25, viewers can follow the European figure skating championships 2023. A rather special edition due to the absence of Russian or Belarusian skaters, the usual big favorites in this sport. As a result of the war in Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been suspended from international competitions. “As recommended by the IOC [Comité international olympique, ndlr], the ISU has agreed that no Russian or Belarusian skater will be invited or allowed to participate in events organized by the federation“, said last March the International Skating Union.

An emblematic tandem of figure skating absent from the competition

But the Russian skaters are not the only absentees from this competition. The French tandem Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, crowned world champion for the fifth time in March 2022 in the south of France, had announced that they would take a short break. The French team therefore intends to win with the young pairs Loicia Demougeot / Théo Le Mercier and Evgenia Lopareva / Geoffrey Brissaud.
