Powered by 5G and Industrial Internet, the smart mine solution was jointly developed by Huawei and Shaanxi Coal Industry Co., Ltd. (Shaanxi Coal Company). It has reached the milestone of a full year of continuous operation. The solution uses technologies such as 5G, cloud computing and AI and related digital applications to significantly improve production efficiency and operational safety at Shaanxi Coal Company’s mines. This makes a strong case for a smart upgrade for the global mining sector and serves as a reference for the application of the industrial internet in other industries.
The solution has integrated ICT technologies into every step of coal mining to eliminate silos and enable data sharing. This supports intelligent cooperation among safety assurance, production, operation, energy saving, environmental protection and other systems, and has improved efficiency in geological exploration, tunneling, mining and more. The solution is also the first of its kind to use an industrial internet platform with a three-tier architecture of Shaanxi Coal Company, its mining companies and the coal mines themselves. This platform has enabled collaborative management and control, intelligent sensing, and efficient decision-making.
Xu Jun, CTO of Huawei’s Mining Division, said that in cooperation with Shaanxi Coal Company’s Hongliulin and Xiaobaodang coal mines, Huawei has developed new practices and applications that meet the specific needs of coal mining. In doing so, Huawei has applied its expertise acquired in 5G, AI, cloud, big data and other technologies, as well as its ability to integrate global resources. This partnership has created a new industry benchmark for smart mines. In particular, the intelligent mining solution can build virtual mines that act as digital twins of physical mines underground, generating more value with the vast amounts of mining data at hand in a safer and more efficient way.
As a result, the Hongliulin coal mine employs 18% fewer workers underground. In addition, 97.7% of its mines now support smart mining, and with 5G video splicing and video calls, smart underground mine management has been enabled. More than 2,700 pieces of equipment at the mine are now connected using common data standards, and 170 million pieces of data are streamed to the data lake every day. This data was used to create more than 100 digital models. This data can also be used as a basis for decision-making in production and operations, as well as for the development of new digital applications using “zero-code” development tools.
The Xiaobaodang coal mine has also enabled intelligent mining processes, equipment and management with the help of 5G and other technologies, which have significantly improved operational safety and production efficiency. The underground mine workforce was reduced by 42%. Key mine assets, including underground water pump rooms and substations, benefit from intelligent, unattended operations thanks to machine patrol inspection and video-based collaboration. In terms of production safety, environmental monitoring devices are able to autonomously detect gas accumulation, fire, flood, ventilation problems and geological events, issue alerts and enable real-time data networking. This can support more informed decision making to significantly improve mine safety management.
