The international Jagd & Hund fair starts on Tuesday in Dortmund with 580 exhibitors from 36 countries. What visitors can expect.

Novelties related to hunting and fishing, a deer calling competition or bird of prey flight shows: This Tuesday (January 24th) is taking place in Dortmund Public fair hunting & dog with 580 exhibitors from 36 countries at the start. Vendors from Europe, the USA, Canada, Argentina, South Africa and Botswana are expected to attend what the organizer says is the largest hunting fair in Europe. A colorful program awaits the visitors, which again includes the selection of the best deer caller, as the fair announced on Monday.

Hunting weapons and equipment such as binoculars, drones, thermal imaging cameras, outdoor clothing or accessories for hunting dogs and off-road vehicles will be presented. Hunting with high-tech bows is attracting increasing attention. This demanding hunting method, which is still very little known in Germany, should also be the focus this time. For six days, the angling scene will also come together for the parallel Fisch & Angel event.

Birds of prey and hunting dogs: demonstrations planned on the stage

According to the organizer, the stage also belongs to them birds of prey and hunting dogs with several shows. Offers on the subject of nature for children are also planned. On Friday, the calls of the rutting deer can be heard again in the exhibition halls – the annual German championship in deer calls is one of the highlights of Jagd & Hund. The applicants – including only one woman – compete with special horns in order to imitate the bellowing red deer as realistically as possible.








According to the German Hunting Association, consumers consumed almost 30,400 tons of game from the region in the 2021/22 season – from April 1st to March 31st – around five percent more than in the previous hunting season. Wild boar is particularly popular – with a nationwide consumption of almost 17,000 tons of meat. This was followed by roe deer with a good 9400 tons, red deer with around 2650 tons and fallow deer with almost 1350 tons. A representative survey commissioned by the association showed that 84 percent of people consider venison to be a healthy, natural food. (dpa)
