IF leads the box office this weekend in the US

The movie of John Krasinski about imaginary friends “IF” was the highest-grossing film this weekend in the United States, grossing $35 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

With the actions of Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming, and the voices of Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Emily BluntLouis Gossett Jr., Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Maya Rudolph, “IF” was the brainchild of Krasinski, who wrote the screenplay, directed it and stars in it.

Paramount released the film, which reportedly cost $110 million to produce, in 4,041 theaters in North America. Internationally, it grossed $20 million in 56 markets, for a global debut of $55 million.

“IF” had a mixed review (49% “rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences gave it an A on CinemaScore. The studio considers it a successful release and is optimistic about its durability as summer begins and children begin their school holidays.

Meanwhile, in 10 days in theaters, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” has grossed more than $100 million in the United States and $237 million internationally. It came in second this weekend with 26 million (a drop of 55%).

Another premiere this weekend was “The Strangers—Chapter 1” with 12 million dollars after screening in 2,856 theaters

The film about Amy Winehouse “Back to Black” was released in 2010 theaters, grossing $2.9 million.

“The Blue Angels” grossed $1.3 million when it screened in 227 theaters this weekend. It is on Imax screens first, and starting May 23 it will begin showing on Prime Video.

The ten highest-grossing films from Friday to Sunday in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore estimates. The final figures come out on Monday.

10. “Unsung Hero” – $1.1 million.
