MUNICH, Germany, April 20 /PRNewswire/

IFCO, the global leader in reusable packaging, is strengthening its sustainability and pooling capabilities with the opening of its state-of-the-art service center in Dannstadt, Germany. Strategically located at a central transport hub in Europe, the best-in-class service center sets impressive standards in terms of energy efficiency, environmental protection and sustainability measures, which are in line with IFCO’s ambitious goals of making operations carbon neutral by 2025 and Achieve net-zero emissions across the business by 2040.

The high-tech facility was awarded the Gold Certificate for Green Buildings by the German Sustainable Building Council, which is internationally recognized as an independent global benchmark for sustainability. The service center in Dannstadt is therefore designed and ideally located to serve customers who are committed to reducing the environmental impact of their entire supply chain and are targeting Scope 3 emissions, i.e. indirect emissions generated from upstream and downstream activities of an organization such as B. Packaging and transport.

In terms of automation and digitization, the Dannstadt service center is one of the most modern and technologically sophisticated facilities of its kind in Europe. Equipped with an automatic sorting and crate detection system, the entire high-pressure washing and sanitizing process is fully automated and designed to handle and sort all sizes and types of IFCO RPCs. In addition, the proven IFCO SmartCycle washing process maximizes water reuse while meeting global standards for hygiene and food safe packaging. The process, validated by both IFCO and independent food safety experts, efficiently and reliably removes approved customer labels.

Dirk Schaich, Director IFCO Supply Chain & Operations, said: “The new facility will benefit our customers on several levels. The Dannstadt area is one of the largest agricultural regions in Germany and is ideally positioned to facilitate transport routes to our trading partners in south-west Germany By checking, repairing and disinfecting our RPCs in this state-of-the-art service center, we can provide our customers with reusable packaging in the most sustainable way.”

The site was conceived and developed with the local community and natural ecosystem in mind. That corresponds IFCO’s ESG strategy, which aims to thrive in the circular economy by further expanding the circular principles of its business model and achieving ambitious goals to become even more sustainable. The park-like design, wildflower meadow and natural pond not only promote employee well-being, but also provide a sanctuary for native birds and local wildlife. Eco-friendly, permeable paving completes the forward-thinking design. Health and safety is paramount, which is why the site is equipped with a high-tech fire protection and sprinkler system.

In addition, the roof is green and equipped with a photovoltaic system that supplies electricity to the building, which is also equipped with modern underfloor heating and LED lighting. A combined heat and power plant feeds energy into a resource-efficient air-to-water heat pump, which supplies the washing machines with electricity and heats the water for the laundry center. This innovative concept enables IFCO to reduce gas consumption and the associated CO2 emissions by almost 23% compared to a standard service center in Europe.

“This flagship service center underscores IFCO’s commitment to providing the most comprehensive, sustainable and efficient reusable packaging that enables our customers to actively participate in the circular economy. In doing so, we are making the fresh food supply chain sustainable,” said Mike Pooley , CEO of IFCO.
